The Undefeated, Pulitzer Center, McClatchy, and Reuters. Day 2.
We started day 2 of our trip by visiting Brent Lewis at The Undefeated. He talked about the necessity for diversity in the journalism industry- and even started a website geared towards diversifying who we hire (diversify.photo). They’re reporting sports in a way that isn’t normally done, by focusing on race and culture. Even as someone who isn’t a huge sports follower, I was hooked.
In the afternoon we went to The Pulitzer Center and met with RIT alum Jordan Roth. We talked about storytelling abroad and ways to get grants through the center. I was really surprised to learn how much they focus on education as a grantee. Afterwards we went to McClatchy. We heard from Nicole Cvetnik (who I met over the summer at Kalish) about the huge network of news outlets that they run. They’re expanding their digital and social teams to start working with VR, AR, 360 videos, and other new ways of storytelling.
At night we went back to Reuters to talk to some independent journalists and eat pizza. We met with
Gabriella Demczuk, Karen Kasmauski, Tom Kennedy, Bill Douthitt, and Mitch Koppelman. We discussed issues of inequality in the newsroom and ways we can combat it by hiring more women and people of color.
