National Geographic and Washington Post. Day 4.

This whole week we’ve been told how important social media knowledge is, but I felt the full effect of it at on Thursday when we went to National Geographic. They told us that when they’re thinking about hiring a photographer, before even looking at a website, they check instagram. They want to see what the photographer spends their day doing, new work, and the follower count. I was astonished that instagram is this heavily valued. After this trip I need to work on my social media presence.

Later that day at Washington Post, they hammered social media in too. They work very heavily in mobile platforms, trying to expand their audience. They specifically build their stories around these social media platforms. MaryAnne Golon, the Director of Photography and assistant editor at WaPo talked to us in detail about their strive for diversity within the workplace. That’s very important to me and I was excited to see that almost every place we went to was actively working towards hiring more women and people of color.
